Personal memories are seen as a very important aspect of local history. They are usually first-hand knowledge of people, places or events that have occured that have, in some way, influenced and individual or family group.

- Fills historical gaps: Official records often ignore marginalized groups, working-class communities, and everyday domestic life. Memories preserve these undocumented experiences
- Captures emotional truth: Textbooks state what happened; memories reveal how it felt, capturing the fear, joy, or resilience of a community during major events.
- Preserves local identity: Dialects, community nicknames, social traditions, and unique neighbourhood boundaries live on primarily through spoken recollections.
- Provides context to landmarks: A building is just brick and mortar until personal stories explain its social value, like a beloved local youth club or a family-run corner shop.
- Challenges official narratives: Personal testimonies can offer alternative perspectives that contradict or add nuance to biased official histories or media reports from the past.
- Fosters community connection: Sharing memories bridges generational gaps, building a shared sense of pride, belonging, and mutual understanding among current residents.
For these reasons, the Redditch Local History Museum has recruited a team of volunteers to run outreach projects specificall to collect personal memories.
This website is dedicated to supporting those projects by assisting past and present residents in recording their local history memories and submitting them to the outreach volunteers, who then will record and publish those memories on this site.
